FAQs
We couldn't find any articles.

What is white ink?

Standard printing uses CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) to create the entire spectrum of printed colours, which means achieving a true, bright white can be difficult. That’s where our speciality white ink comes in!

White ink is a unique printing technique that lets you add bold designs to various materials. We use a spot colour printing process, which involves passing your print through the presses several times to layer up the white colour to create a strong white.

It’s especially striking on darker or coloured surfaces, like black cardstock or vibrant paper, where the contrast really makes the design pop. This method creates eye-catching results, perfect for anyone looking to make their prints stand out.

Can all printers print white ink?

That's a great question! Not all printers can print white ink. Standard CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) printers don't actually include white as a printing colour. To print white ink, we need special technology and equipment. That's why it's considered one of our unique special finishing options!

How do I setup my artwork for white ink printing?

Crafting white ink print is easy at Printed.com, just start by choosing your base paper stock and create your design.

Because your artwork will require extra setup, please refer to our free white ink artwork guide here to prepare your files correctly. Contact our Bespoke Team if you need extra advice, they're always happy to help!

What's the difference between white foil and white ink?

White foil and white ink each offer unique finishes and are suited to different design needs. Here’s a breakdown of their characteristics and limitations:

 White Foil:

  • Provides a solid, bright white finish with a bold, eye-catching effect.
  • Has a subtle pearlescent sheen that reflects light, adding an elegant, decorative touch.
  • Applied as a foil layer on top of the paper, so it sits on the surface and can feel subtly raised.
  • Best for logos, names, headings, or statement details.

White Ink:

  • Offers a more natural white color with a flat, matt finish.
  • Printed directly onto the paper using ink, ensuring a smooth, consistent look.
  • Ideal for text, illustrations, and designs that need a softer effect.
  • Perfect for dark or coloured backgrounds, and available on our GF Smith Colorplan papers.

Choose white foil for a bold, decorative finish or white ink for a versatile, natural look with excellent detail!
