Paper weights explained
Paper vs. Card & Text vs. Cover
- Text stock is lighter and more flexible, usually referred to as paper - think Brochures, Flyers, or the inside pages of a book.
- Cover stock is thicker and sturdier, usually referred to as card - perfect for Postcards, Business Cards, or book covers.
lbs (Pounds) vs. pt (Points)
- Pounds (lbs) measure paper weight - the higher the number, the heavier the stock. An 80lb text sheet is thinner than an 80lb cover sheet, as they’re measured on different scales.
- Points (pt) measure thickness. One point = one-thousandth of an inch. For example, 10pt cover stock is 0.010" thick.
- An 80lb text stock is roughly 4pt, and an 80lb cover stock is roughly 10pt, however this can differ per paper type.
Converting weights to gsm
- gsm is another measurement of paper weight used in the print industry, and stands for 'grams per square meter'.
- Converting pounds (lbs) and points (pt) to gsm (grams per square meter) is largely dependent on the individual stock you're weighing and therefore can vary from paper to paper.
- However, generally text stocks range from approximately 100gsm to 150gsm, and cover stocks range from 200gsm to 400gsm.
