Classroom Posters: More Than Just a Display

Wall displays are an important part of any educational space. They create a lively, welcoming environment for learning, but there’s more to classroom posters than just decoration. From keeping pupils informed to learning aids and classroom management, here are a few ways Posters can benefit a learning environment.

Introducing new topics

Classroom Posters are a great way to set the scene for a new teaching topic. Creating a display gets students interested and ready to take in new information. For example, if your new topic was the solar system, some Posters of the planets might be displayed a few days before teaching begins to stir up interest from pupils.

Supplementing teaching aids

Posters can include teaching aids that reinforce other learning materials, helping bring the subject to life. For example, if they’re learning about a particular country, a Poster with images of native dress, foods, or landmarks can help give students a more rounded understanding.

Key information and facts

Displaying information that students need to memorise is helpful, especially basics like times tables, spellings, or key facts. Placing it in a prominent part of the classroom also helps students learn – absorbing the information naturally as they are looking at it so often.

Class management

School Posters can be a good way to promote classroom management. Display a list of routines, rules or tasks to be completed to ensure everyone is aware of class expectations.

Primary School Posters

Primary school is the first phase of formal schooling for children aged between 5 and 11 years old. Early stages introduce foundational numeracy and literacy, as well as science, art, and physical education. Later stages build on foundational skills, adding in humanities subjects and music.

Primary school is also a key time for children to learn about building friendships, and understanding values.

In a primary school setting, Posters can be used to display key facts and helpful reminders, as well as encouraging children to be kind and respectful.

Secondary School Posters

Secondary school teaches children between the ages of 11 and 16. In secondary education, children develop their understanding in core subjects like maths, English and science, and subjects like modern foreign languages, technology and computing are introduced. Secondary schools encourage children to get involved in extra-curricular activities like clubs and sports, expanding on skills and socialising with new people. From year 9 onwards, students will begin studying for their exams. GCSEs in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and National 4s and 5s in Scotland.

This is also a time where young people start gaining access to social media which can present its own challenges.

Secondary school posters might include learning materials, revision reminders, information about clubs and activities, and reminders of how to use social media appropriately.

College Posters

Also known as sixth form, this is where students 16+ study qualifications like A Levels, Scottish Higher’s, BTEC and vocational courses. This level of education can be used to access university study or step into the world of work.

At this level, students have a lot more freedom, but are also expected to take more responsibility for their own learning. Students have to be much more independent, not only in their learning but managing their time and attendance.

Poster ideas for colleges and sixth forms begin to focus less on learning materials and more on student information, motivation, and highlighting the importance of managing their learning independently.

University Posters

For those pursuing further education, university is a common next step. For many students, university is a big change. They may be leaving home for the first time, living in a brand new place and meeting new people.

Choosing a university is a big decision, so many students attend open days. Once enrolled, most uni’s have welcome weeks to help students settle in, find their way around, and meet coursemates.

University posters focus around student information, from open days to study groups to help students navigate their first taste of independence.
