How to design a gallery wall
Step 1: Choose your pieces
The first step to creating your gallery wall is to choose the pieces you want to display. This is a really enjoyable process as it allows you to get creative! Whether you want a chic, neutral display or bold, bright colours to make a statement, this step is all about making your gallery wall feel unique to you. Don’t be afraid to add other items – old photographs, polaroids, or even tickets and mementos can make a gallery wall feel even more personal.
If you need some inspiration, our Framed Prints come in a wide range of designs, colours, and sizes.

Step 2: Choose your frames
Next, pick out some frames for your pieces. You have lots of freedom here – you can go for a cohesive look by opting for matching frames, or mix and match styles and colours for a bolder, more eclectic gallery wall. Our Wall Frames are available in a range of sizes, colours, and mounting options, with UV-protective, anti-scratch plexiglass to keep your artwork, prints, and photographs protected.

Step 3: Measure your space
Measure the amount of space you want the gallery to fill. Remember to account for any furniture that you might be arranging around. You might want to measure your frames at this point, too. Our Ultimate Guide to Frame Sizes will help ensure you have the right size frames for each of your pieces.
Step 4: Plan your gallery wall layout
Mark out the size of your space on the floor. You could use an old sheet, flattened cardboard boxes or even tape together some paper to create an area the same dimensions as your gallery wall space.
Lay out all your pieces within the area. This way, you can experiment with the placement as much as you like without damaging your wall. Keep moving everything around until you’re happy.
Another option is to cut out pieces of paper in the dimensions of your pieces and place them on the wall using masking tape. This can also come in handy when it comes to hanging your gallery wall, as you’ll know exactly where everything needs to go.
Step 5: Assemble your gallery wall
Once you’ve nailed the layout, take a photo as reference, then start transferring your pieces to the wall. Take a step back once in a while to check your work from a distance to ensure everything looks good.
There are many different ways to fix your frames to the wall, from a classic nail to special hanging fixtures and stickers, so you can find the right type for your needs.
Top tips to bring your gallery wall to life
- Try and space all your pieces at least three inches apart to avoid an overcrowded look.
- Place your biggest pieces first and build around them. For smaller collections, the largest piece tends to look best in one of the corner spaces. For a larger collection, a slightly off-centre position tends to work best – this is because the eye travels around the gallery wall instead of just focusing on the middle piece.
- Keep your second largest piece separate from the first to keep your display balanced.
- Mix portrait and landscape pieces to keep it interesting.
