When it comes to print and design, you won’t find a more knowledgeable (or handsome) bunch. Get up close and personal
with the people behind the print…
Researching products, papers and ideas; it’s all in a day’s work for the Operations team.

“…a man you always want on your team…”
Operating a rather strict office policy of no electrical wires on show, no brown boxes and 6 inch high heels to be worn at all times (yes, this does include the boys) his staff live in fear of his quick witted put downs and garish socks. Nick is a man you always want on your team. Get him to really like you and he may even treat you to a Colin the caterpillar cake; but remember, he'll always want something in return. The ambition is very simple: "to build printed.com into the easiest and biggest site on the internet for buying digital print through".
“Research is creating new knowledge”
Product Executive Jess hails from Watford, so you know she means business. She fills her days researching print products, pricing, testing the site and gossiping like a pro. Despite her obvious girliness, Jess is a self-proclaimed horror film aficionado and will watch almost any gory, nightmare-inducing flick, but her all-time favourite is The Grudge (the original, not the remake). Just don’t get into a conversation about food with her…you’ll be reaching for the snack cabinet before you know it.
“Life is like a trumpet - if you don't put anything into it, you don't get anything out of it.”
Jack is a timid Cancerian with a dark secret…when he was a child he auditioned for the role of the Milky Bar Kid. And didn’t get it. Because he didn’t make it in show business, Jack works here with us at printed.com, researching products and making sure our customers get the most out of them. Never one to blow his own trumpet (because he doesn’t have one, but he does have grade 3 piano), Jack is just an all-round nice guy, who’s always up for getting the teas in. He’s been slogging away at his craft since the tender age of 17, and in the rare moments he’s not thinking about print products, Jack is busy hosting his own internet radio show, cycling and running. But not all at the same time.
Steve works with printed.com as a strategic data consultant. He is founding partner of Persuasion Engines, which is about to launch Psyche, a new marketing tool, in to the UK. A man after our own heart, Steve's motto is "it's not a crisis if there's strong coffee". When printed.com gives him a moment's peace, Steve likes to do triathlons, drink fine wines and read finer books.
David joined straight from school, and has now been with the company for 23 years, what he doesn't know about the industry isn't worth knowing. As Production Director David is a key man at printed.com. He is responsible for making sure all work goes out on time, ensuring it is all correct and present and is also charged with looking after all of the production staff. On the odd occasion he is allowed to escape the realm of ink and paper, he enjoys spending time with his family talking about digital print.
He's been with the company for 25 years and currently holds the role of Environmental Specialist. Brainiac Bernard has a diploma in management studies and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply. When he's not knee-deep in ink cartridges and paper, Bernard likes to indulge in sport. He is an avid Tottenham Hotspur fan and is trying to regain his fitness despite apparently having two dodgy knees!
Marketing and advertising guru Matt advises printed.com on acquisition, media and marketing. Matt is currently Chief Executive and founder of shomei.com and co-founder and Managing Director Europe at Tracking.net. When Matt has some spare time, he enjoys coaching rugby, mountain biking and spending time with his family.
“I love the idea that every artist dips their brush in their soul, but I keep dipping mine in my tea.”
Dan was one of our customers before he joined the printed.com team — we loved his designs so much, we asked him to come and work with us permanently! Before he was helping us jazz up our site, Dan was a freelance illustrator and also had a brief stint designing toys for Disney. His main life’s loves include designing new pages for printed.com, writing for other creatives, singing, drawing and cooking curries. He spent two years living in British Colombia, Canada, and still says it’s his most favourite place in the world.
“For me, successful writing involves annoying designers with obscure punctuation”
Wordsmith Emma has an eye for detail when crafting copy for the printed.com website, but in real life she is a bit of a klutz. She electrocuted herself when working at Starbucks and once set fire to her own hand. A huge sci-fi and horror fan, she was president and founder of the Brunel University Sci-fi Society and has even had a short story published in a sci-fi magazine. Home is the place where she fashions subversive needlework pieces and tends to her surrogate children - two British Shorthair cats. Emma has an MA in Creative and Professional writing, and is always ready with a combined dictionary and thesaurus to tackle any copy job.
“The best way to predict the future is to invent it.”
When asked to tell us a little about himself, Martin didn’t hold back; he freely admitted a deep-rooted concern over his ever-increasing collection of cardigans and how disturbed he feels regarding a recent fetish for corduroy. Luckily for us, Martin’s poor taste in fashion doesn’t affect his work—as Product Manager for our Wedding Collection, he’s responsible for improving existing products, hunting for new ones and keeping the whole collection as wonderful as possible. Apart from the lush beard and knitwear, Martin can be defined by his ‘unwavering devotion’ to doughnuts.
“You’ll never walk alone”
Every office needs a Ben Stiller look-alike, are we right? Liverpool fan John says he doesn’t see the resemblance, but we think he’s just being coy. As Commercial Director, John directs us commercially, stopping only to pummel our eardrums with his loud laugh and even louder phone voice. He is in charge channelling our love of print and inherent silliness into money-making cleverness. Our advice when dealing with John: don’t challenge him to a game of golf—whether you’re playing the crazy or mini variety, you’ll lose hands down.
“…a techoholic since the tender age of eight…”
Lee, named for the infamous Bruce Lee, is our technical action man and has been a techoholic since the tender age of eight! It's Lee's job to oversee development and to manage all the projects we throw at the technical team. He pashes on technical strategy and tinkering with the servers, and has an unhealthy relationship with his MacBook Pro. Lee masks his love for womanly Starbucks beverages (skinny vanilla latte, anyone?) by hiking mountains, cycling, playing sports and practicing various martial arts. He uses this training to smash technical tasks into oblivion. He is also obsessed with doors.
“…laid back, mellow and adamant…”
Originally from Pakistan, Bilal gained his Degree in Computer Sciences before coming to the UK to complete his Masters in Advanced Software Engineering. Basically he is like well clever yeah. When he isn't chained to his desk, Bilal enjoys traveling, Xbox and riding shotgun on road trips. Apparently this one time, he popped out to the shop & ended up in another country with three of his friends. We have a feeling there's more to that story. His friends describe him as laid back, mellow and adamant. We'll add Ninja to that, he really is quite stealth-like and seems to have the ability to enter and leave a room without making a sound.
“…uses all his elite technical skills to tinker with the back-end of the printed.com website…”
Flame-haired Ashley is an avid football fan and once served as Gillingham FC’s mascot when he was seven. Don’t be fooled by his love of sport — Ashley is every bit as nerdy as you’d expect a printed.com software developer to be. He first got into programming by modifying first person games and used to enjoy building and supporting community websites for MMO games (that’s “massively multiplayer online games” to you and me). He uses all his elite technical skills to tinker with the back-end of the printed.com website, doing things we probably wouldn’t understand. More than keyboards and computer screens, Ashley’s hobbies also include drumming, seeing live bands and perving on cars.
“PHP is a fractal of bad design.”
Polish teamster Dominik is passionate about code, and when we say passionate, we mean aggressively passionate. He believes that all code should be beautiful, well thought out, functional and “written like a great story book”. Luckily, we were able to provide an outlet for this obsessive love by giving Dom the opportunity to spend his days building and maintaining the printed.com site with meticulous precision. Outside of work, you’ll find Dom playing an unhealthy amount of computer games, sleeping and swotting up. Although he doesn’t consider himself to be an academic, Dom is pleased to say that he finished secondary school and that he has a driver’s license. He walks really fast, too.
In his first week as Software Engineer at printed.com, Matt bamboozled the whole office with his uncanny ability to solve a Rubik’s Cube in less than three minutes. Although he pretends to be introverted and shy, Matt is as lairy as they come when he thinks no one is looking. He can usually be found worrying away at the back end of the printed.com site, building things and doing technical stuff. He carries a slip of paper in his wallet containing Latvian phrases; we’ve yet to find out why.
“Live life to the edge of possibilities.”
Not just a first-class developer, Stephen also races remote control cars, arranges British country music showcase events and travels regularly. He was born and raised five minutes from the peak district, and much like a young Heidi, spent his youth frolicking in the mountains. A man of culture and refinement, his favourite places to visit are New York and Rome, but he is a sucker for a good cruise. When he isn't jetting off, racing or being the toast of the country music scene, he puts his Multimedia degree to good use by helping the Development Team build printed.com into the paradise you see before you.
“…dexterous guitar-playing fingers make him a dab hand at superfast coding...”
Bringing rockstar cool to the Dev team is the first order of business for Jesus/Russell Brand lookalike, Jordan. Like a few of the printed.com teamsters before him, Jordan has a secret history in the fame game and once toured in a signed metal band, even having one of his tunes played by Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson on a rock show. His dexterous guitar-playing fingers make him a dab hand at superfast coding and getting new features and pages up on the site in double time. Jordan likes to spend his free time teaching guitar, pumping iron in the gym and beering it up with friends.
“Quality is not act, it is a habit!”
Ping pong enthusiast NJ is a firm believer in perfection and wants everyone to know it! When he isn’t busy working on his ‘spiny ping pong serve’, NJ is checking that everything we design, write and build for printed.com is up to scratch before it goes live for the world to see. He started his career in print after moving to the UK from India, equipped with his degree in Computer Science, before joining the gang here at printed.com. We’ve made him a team jacket, so there’s no leaving now.
Some say Brian is a specialist; his job is a bit complex and hardcore and none of us actually really know what it is he does. He likes to tell people that he’s the thankless hero of the printed.com machine; detecting problems with print files and processes, fixing them secretly, never seeking recognition. Like Batman. It has been suggested that he actually monitors what everyone in the office is doing and reports back to Nick about who’s been playing on Facebook all day. These rumours haven’t been confirmed.
“Adapt and evolve—search for new opportunities and explore them.”
Marco is our resident South African who loves a good game of paintball. He will not be beaten and in fact almost went pro until his daughter came along. Marco is a dedicated father and loves to bore us, sorry, entertain us with funny videos of his little ray of sunshine. Citing his greatest achievements as having eaten a 2.1kg steak + portion of chips + 1 litre of beer in 1 hour (greedy) and winning a colouring competition when he was 12 (wow, congratulations on that Marco) he is also a dab hand at assisting his wife with her novelty cake baking. In the office Marco manages our SEO and PPC and what an excellent job he does too.
“Creating ideas, connecting the partners.”
Lydia has the honorific title of ‘Longest Running Intern’ here at printed.com and was the first to get her own video diary—something she says she’d rather forget. Besides torturing her with video cameras, we trust Lydia to create and maintain long-lasting relationships with other companies so we can run cool competitions and promotions. She might be one of our youngest team members, but Lydia is well qualified for the job; she’s got a degree in Advertising from The University of East London and over two years intern experience with us! A keen sailor, Lydia has an RYA level 3 qualification but no grizzly tattoos to speak of.
“You can have results or excuses, not both.”
As our DevOps Engineer, Timi brings a wealth of knowledge to the printed.com Tech team, including a Bachelor’s in Internet Engineering, work experience in New York and an award for playing in every sports team at school (*cough* overachiever *cough*). It’s his job to make sure that the site stays online, as well as managing and monitoring its infrastructure. Outside of work, Timi is a bit of a gym addict—pretty handy when you consider his love for everything cake or biscuit-shaped. He’s an Arsenal fan, but we’ll overlook that because we like him.
“…thrives on making printed.com a better place to shop…”
It's all about heels, heels, heels for vertically challenged Head of Customer Service, Nicola. A fanatical foodie, she adores cooking, and claims that it only takes a few glasses of wine to turn her into a three-star Michelin chef. When she isn't organising the office, the Customer Service staff and things which people are still using, she is being dragged over mountain ranges of the UK by her boyfriend. Nicola has been called out by her team as a lip gloss addict, and unwittingly applies at least 100 times a day. Heading up the ever-expanding Customer Service team Nicola thrives on making printed.com a better place to shop, and has her eyes set on a trophy at the Customer Service Awards!
“Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.”
When it comes to being a big kid, Amy wins hands down. Serial giggler and cartoon lover, Amy says that the best place she’s ever visited is Disneyland, Florida. That’s not to say that Amy doesn’t mean business — she has a diploma in management and is currently doing an NVQ in management, too. Ever the enigma, Amy is petrified of wet hands and spiders, but will happily bungee jump or settle down to watch a gory film. She’s always up for a challenge, especially when it comes to solving tricky customer service quandaries; your questions are in good hands, guys!
“Love the life you live, live the life you love.”
Young Ami is a fun, energetic and helpful person who loves to chat. Ami enjoys a good laugh and is a real addition to our Customer Service team. As well as being outgoing and lively, especially after a few vodka and lemonades, Ami also loves the finer things in life. Walking along the coast on a warm summer's night and dining in expensive restaurants is what really excites Ami but nothing gets her quite as warm and fuzzy as sharing a big bar of chocolate with her 2 boys Smokey and Joey. Ami has spent all her life working in print and is still loving it!
“I live in my own little world. But it’s okay, they know me here!”
Danielle has been within the company for the last three years, and recently joined the printed.com team. Filled with piercings and covered in tattoos, she brings hardcore to customer service like you've never seen, tackling customer service problems and busting them like lightning. Danielle actively shuns anything pink, fluffy or girly, favouring an all-black attire for cruising on her motorbike. An animal lover at heart, she owns two ferrets, one cat and a boyfriend, but only one of these is allowed to sleep on the bed. Danielle is desperate to visit Australia and one day hopes to be an astronaut.
“Life is short…so smile while you still have teeth.”
Globetrotting Jen used to be an air hostess, and she loves riding the skies and visiting different countries. Being a sun-worshipper, her favourite places are Florida, Egypt and Gran Canaria. Now she brings her sunny disposition to the printed.com Customer Service team, helping you out with your print questions with a smile. That's when she's not attempting to break her own record for the most maltesers she can fit in her mouth (29). She's originally from Scotland and likes to drink wine and laugh a lot; her cheerful disposition goes a long way when helping customers set things right again!
“If what you have done yesterday still looks big to you, you haven't done much today.”
Laura is one big ball of enthusiastic, customer-loving energy. She takes care of all our first time customers and is so personable that she’s confident even aliens would be keen to get a call from her. She says that one of her biggest loves in life (apart from shopping) is her miniature cat, Tuppence, who she’s convinced will one day actually talk back to her. Laura has a habit of nodding and talking with her hands while on the phone to customers—even though they can’t see her.
“You don’t make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures
you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.”
The guy in charge of everything photography at printed.com is none other than vertical market specialist, James. When he isn’t liaising with customers and poring over photographic print quality, he’s quite the toast of the photography scene, boasting membership to The Society of Wedding & Portrait Photographers, the Guild of photographers and Wedding & Portrait Photographers International. He’s photographed everyone from the general public to Government Ministers and royalty. If you weren’t impressed by any of that (and why wouldn’t you be?) our resident photography specialist is also a RAF Regiment Gunner in the reserves.
“Everything happens for a reason.”
If you ever doubted that you’re in good hands, drop an email to Customer Service Advisor, Becci. She’s an award winner, boasting several accolades for giving outstanding service in the industry, topped off with NVQ levels 2 and 3 in Customer Service. She loves playing with her kids, but says chucking on a onesie and snuggling on the couch with a huge bar of chocolate is her favourite thing to do once the little nippers are in bed. A final piece of advice about Becci: don’t sit down to watch a girly film with her (she’s a crier).
“Do not expect anyone to do something you would not do yourself.”
To say that David is a workaholic would be a massive understatement. When we asked him what he likes to do in his spare time, he told us he loves nothing more than coming into work…on Sundays at 5am. David has worked within our group of companies for the past 22 years—if that’s not dedication we just don’t know what is. He uses his ultimate printing knowledge to offer technical support to customers, and to help Customer Service with the trickier issues. Aside from working, David loves to hang out with his kids and has recently developed a serious addiction to Breaking Bad.
“…can regularly be found working well into the night…”
When Peter is not fronting "Coldplay" he works for printed.com on Customer Service and Pre-Press. Peter has great knowledge of the print trade and has worked for the Independent, Sunday Telegraph, Mail on Sunday, The Observer and The Guardian. Peter loves all things outdoors and can regularly be found running, mountain biking, canoeing or camping with his son. Peter started working for us in December 2010 and can regularly be found working well into the night.
“Life is like a piece of paper…you never know what we’re gonna print.”
Dan is our pre-press guru, with the know-how to help you perfect your files for print. He has a degree in Illustration and Design, and combines his artistic leanings with technical savvy. Before printed.com he worked at BT for seven years in advanced technical support. He's very laid back, but hardworking and reliable. Dan enjoys the odd night out and describes his favourite drinks as 'the wet ones'. Most Sunday mornings, when he can run in a straight line, he likes to play Sunday League football. His sporting prowess showed itself at the age of five, when he came second in the egg and spoon race (he still has the medal).
“…helping people with their digital print requirements…”
Rachael loves spending time with her friends and family, shopping, going to the cinema and eating out. When she's not playing the socialite Rachael likes to get out and about on long walks or drives, dependant on the weather. A champion ice-skater, Rachael loves spending time on the ice showcasing her triple axels to her crowds of adoring fans. If you ask nicely she'll send you a video of her in action. Rachael thoroughly enjoys working for printed.com and helping people with their digital print requirements.
“…A self-professed geek…”
If you’re stuck formatting your artwork for print, you’ll be grateful to know that there are guys like James at the other end of the phone. A self-professed geek with a Higher National Diploma in graphic design, James is well positioned to help you get your artwork to print without any fuss. When he isn’t busy saving the day with the rest of the Customer Service team, James is holed up at home, gaming and chilling out. In fact, he tells us he’s something of a ‘gaming wizard’—we haven’t had the opportunity to put this to the test just yet, though.
“…plays pretty much every sport going…”
Every office needs a jock, and printed.com is no exception. Michael (or teen wolf, as he’s known to the rest of the Newcastle team) plays pretty much every sport going, including cricket, golf, American football and all kinds of athletics. We’re exhausted just thinking about it! Luckily he’s not too tired after all that physical activity to help set up print for customers. Not just content with being a press jockey for us, Michael’s got his sights set on traveling the world.
“…loves numbers and watching printed.com grow…”
Kevin has been part of the printed.com team for many years. Like all accountants he loves numbers and watching printed.com grow. Travelling often between our offices in London and Newcastle he can been seen on trains crunching numbers and working out how we can improve our service and deliver work faster and more efficiently. Almost the only member of our team who wears a suit and tie every day we love him because he loves to watch businesses grow. Just make sure you pay your bills because as a true Newcastle fan he has some scary friends.
“…knows the movement of every single penny…”
Mrs Brough has been with the company for 3 years. An ACA Chartered accountant she knows the movement of every single penny here at printed.com, there's no borrowing from the petty cash when she's around. Paul thinks she's forgotten, but that 46p he borrowed for a KitKat is rapidly accumulating interest for a deposit for her next property. Just because she works in finance don't mistake her for not knowing how to party, we've seen that tattoo on her ankle, something to do with Ibiza, 6 jugs of sangria, 2 dolphins and a police man apparently. Becky loves to travel and has recently returned from honeymooning in Indonesia.
“Those who take hyphens too seriously are bound to go mad.”
When you send a tweet or post a Facebook update to the printed.com social sites, you might not realise that a trained Astrophysicist is responding to you. No word of a lie. Victoria left the mysteries of deep space behind to come and interact with lovely customers like you, as well as researching and planning all the content for the blog and making sure our site content works hard for us. As well as being a sciencey smarty pants, she also has a Masters in International Journalism and — and this is the really impressive bit —National Maths Challenge Silver Award. We’re still waiting for her to build us a rocketship…
“Chillax. It’s a combination of chilling and relaxing.”
Michael was named after Michael Jackson, circa 1980s—a fact he’s keen to point out. Although this dude from down under is a numbers man to the core (he has a Degree in Economics), Michael actually started out in biotechnology before deciding that microscopes just weren’t for him. Biotechnology’s loss is our gain; Michael keeps our Marketing team stocked with insightful data and lots of colourful graphs. He once won a case of beer at a basketball championship, but freely admits that his team cheated. If you ever need a good slow jams mix-tape, he’s your man.
