If you are getting married in 2014 and still haven’t decided on your wedding theme listen up!
Gone are the days when matching flowers and bridesmaid dresses were all there was to consider, themes can be much more fun and turn your wedding day into something truly memorable.
Stationery is an important aspect of every wedding. The invitation is the first impression your guests will receive of your special day, so you want to make your theme obvious and exciting from the moment they open their invitation.
Made popular in recent months by ‘Downton Abbey’ and ‘The Great Gatsby’ this is the new and more unique take on ‘vintage’.
The 1920s was an exciting age of fun, glamour, extravagance and elegance. Bold geometric and often symmetric patterns know as ‘Art Deco’ style is what you need to look out for. Golds/yellows/black and browns work brilliantly together to make a stylish 1920’s invitation design, but that doesn’t mean you should only stick to these colours. A good stationer will adapt a design to look amazing with any colour combination, making it unique to you.
Why not go for something really jazzy with pearls, crystals and even a feather added to really make an impression!
Take this theme further on the day with table names after 1920’s stars, books or films.
Downton style 1920’s and Crystal Dreams invitations
This theme has been growing in popularity and does not show any signs of stopping, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still make it personal to you. Vintage/Retro can really showcase everything from the 1920’s to the 70’s so lots of choice. It’s all about creating nostalgia; as well as being completely on trend, the theme can also be appreciated by older guests at the wedding.
Anything from lace and floral patterns to bold almost fairground style fonts and colours can work well.
Vintage Label pocketfold and Retro Words invitations
One of my personal favourite themes as it’s all about romance, pretty floral patterns and quirks. This gives the impression of a very laid back, romantic, carefree couple. Perfect for an outside or rustic barn wedding and really getting back to nature. Natural browns and earthy colour can work well, or in contrast lots of bright pastel shades. It’s best to not be too formal with this type of theme, so perhaps addressing the invitations from the bride and groom themselves rather than the parents. You can incorporate many other theme elements whilst still keeping your boho style such as shabby chic or vintage. Let your imagination run wild!

Perhaps you are getting married abroad? Even if you aren’t, maybe you were proposed to abroad, met abroad or just have the travel bug in you.
Anything with elements of travel can be used – boarding pass or passport style invitations, postcards and stamps, maps or globes, flags, or very small hints such as planes or even hot air balloons featured on your stationery. In terms of style and colour there are no boundaries so you really can make it as personal to you as possible.
Carry this theme through to the wedding day using table names named after places you have visited, or places that are significant to your lives as a couple. Suitcase table plans are also a very eye-catching idea.

Alice in Wonderland
This is the kind of theme you need to go all out with to make it obvious enough for the guests; it may not be everybody’s cup of tea but is a theme you can really run wild with! Popular since the release of Tim Burtons film version in 2010 this theme can be a lot of fun!
You really can be as crazy and whimsical as you like with this one, bright contrasting or even clashing colours, kitsch looking teapots, rabbits, clocks and playing cards, the list of elements to consider are endless. If you want to stick to the basics then red, white and black immediately make you think of the chessboards, and rose gardens of the Queen of Hearts.
You can of course turn this theme into something quite dark and even gothic if you have the guts!
Why not name your tables after popular Alice in Wonderland characters.
