My husband and I decided to start our stationery company 'CL.AM CORRESPONDENCE' late last year, after orchestrating our own thoroughly DIY 'Mexicana' inspired Wedding. We both come from design backgrounds and really wanted our wedding to be completely personal, and reflect our eclectic tastes, influences and loves. While we were planning, we felt there was quite a gap in the market when it came to really exciting, original wedding decor and stationery. We (along with our families) made and designed everything ourselves; from the paper flower decorations, the placemat menus and table centres, to the invitations and envelopes. We even designed our own individual ‘activity packs' consisting of quizzes, craft activities, and a Mexican lotto game. We also had a fluorescent photo booth made by my Father-in-law, and had friends handcrafting our own personal likeness pinãtas!
Above all, we wanted our day to have a really relaxed, colourful and fun fiesta/festival feel to it, and for none of our guests to have the opportunity to feel bored! While this level of DIY may not be for everyone (I did almost have a breakdown the night before, assembling it all!) your wedding is a real chance to create a day completely tailored to your tastes and desires, and can be as simple or full-on as you choose it to be.
We enjoyed the wedding stationery side of it so much, that we decided we wanted to continue doing it after we returned from our Mexico honeymoon. As we are both from fashion print backgrounds, it's important to us that our stationery has a fashion and design influence to it, as well as taking inspiration from wider culture and our travels abroad. Our aim is to reimagine the art of correspondence in an increasingly digital focused world, and recapture the pleasure of sending and receiving handwritten notes.
We want to cover unique and exciting stationery products by using the outside of the envelope as the platform for our design ranges, along with co-ordinating notelets, cards and hand-stamped gift tags. We offer 'Thank-You' and 'Save the Date' options in all of our designs, as well as a unique bespoke wedding invitation service. Our Azteca, Tropicana and Sicilia designs are proving to be particularly popular, and are a great way to set the tone if you are planning to have a bohemian summer festival feel to your w-day!
Our Azteca design is brilliantly vibrant and colourful, inspired by the gorgeous textiles we saw on our Mexican travels, as well as catwalk designers like Mara Hoffman, whose shows always consist of a dramatic explosion of tribal prints. The variety of colours within our designs make it easy to tie in your theme if you choose to have one, or as a starting point to build your individual boho vibe with personal touches that will make your day truly unique.
I found brightly coloured paper garlands and streamers are an excellent and inexpensive way to give that laid-back festival look, and create a stunning backdrop to your photos. It is also nice to group small clusters of candles and eclectic wild flowers in glass jars and tins, so guests can still chat over the displays. I decorated my jam jars by covering them in lace and pops of bright trimmings and tape, and painting tin cans with test pots which was surprisingly effective!
Our Tropicana design was born out of an ongoing love of retro tropical prints, a passion for the colour mint, and also takes influence from Roberto Cavalli's Spring/Summer 2014 catwalk show, which clashed vibrant tropical florals with punky plaids. In these softer hues, it would work perfectly for a spring/summer wedding, and you could go 'all out' with a complete Hawaii/tiki theme if you wanted!
Bringing more unusual elements into your day like tropical palm leaves, fringed tissue paper, and raffa ribbon detailing could really build on the whole tropical essence. Or you could pick one of the pastel hues and go for a more simple, sophisticated theme tied together with soft pretty colours, and beautiful floral displays.
All of our range is designed by ourselves, sent to print on flat sheets, and then hand-made, embossed and photographed by us in our South London studio. It is quite a long and involved process, but at the end of it, you are getting luxury, fashion-led stationery all made and produced in the UK, which is really important to us.
We are currently working on expanding our ranges, which will include a wider selection of Wedding Invitations and stationery; you can keep up to date with our progress via our blog or follow us on Twitter.
